We are very excited to invite you to join the next chapter for HiTOP as a founding member of the new HiTOP Society! The HiTOP Society is dedicated to advancing the empirical classification of psychopathology and disseminating these advances to scientists and clinicians.
Why do we need a HiTOP Society?
Over the past nine years we’ve outgrown our grassroots origins, and we need a formal structure with clear and transparent procedures and policies.
We developed some initial bylaws with the guiding principle of democratising leadership, which we are using to incorporate as a non-profit organisation.
Importantly, although the society will formalize the social, political, and (new) financial aspects of HiTOP, all HiTOP-related research efforts—including workgroup projects and the revisions of the official model—will remain independent and are protected in the bylaws from the influence of the social, political, and financial interests of the society.
The membership dues will be $150 for faculty and $20 for students, with discounts available to anyone with a financial need for reduced fees.
What are the membership dues for?
Collecting dues will allow the society to support members’ quantitative psychopathology research through awards, scholarships, and grants, and to organize future annual research meetings independently.
Who can join?
Regular membership includes any adult with a terminal degree (e.g., Masters, PhD, MD) in psychology, psychiatry, social work, or a related field.
Student membership has two sub-categories:
Undergraduate. Any adult currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree program, or who received their undergraduate degree in the 3 years preceding the date of application.
Graduate. Any adult currently enrolled in a terminal degree program in psychology, psychiatry, or a related field.
Individuals who don’t fall into one of these sub-categories but believe they qualify as a trainee are encouraged to contact the membership committee with a description of their status.
What does it mean to become a member of the HiTOP Society?
Members will have discounted registration fees at the annual meeting and will be eligible to apply for the society’s forthcoming awards and grants.
Founding members (i.e., those who join before the first elections, to be held in 2025) will have the opportunity to run for office in the inaugural leadership roles of the society—including President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Chairs of standing committees—as well as to vote in those elections.
Members will also have a voice in shaping the nature and direction of the society, as the first elected officials will work with members to develop the operating procedures.
When can I join?
Membership will officially be available next week when registration opens for the 2025 HiTOP Conference. We hope you’ll join us in this next chapter!
Sincerely,
The HiTOP Society Executive Committee
